My Newest Obsession

Polyvore is definitely my latest obsession. I love looking at clothes and putting them together and seeing what new and exciting things I can do with them. Follow me over on Polyvore and stay up-to-date with my latest creations!

This is definitely inspiring me to plan my outfits ahead of time. It’s nice to be able to play around with something before actually committing to try it on!

Dress Drama

My high school’s formal is coming up this week. As I was looking for a dress to wear, it was really important to me to not just find a cute dress (that fits under our extensive dress code rules), but to find a special dress. If I didn’t love it, it wasn’t going to happen. I went shopping one day but wasn’t finding anything that worked for me. As I got home that night, I remembered a dress that my mom had hanging in her closet. The dress was my grandmothers and it was the dress she wore leaving her wedding reception to go on her honeymoon. I went upstairs and tried it on and it was perfect! Well….almost perfect. Due to the dress being so old, it had some tears and the fabric was worn through around the shoulders. So on Wednesday of this past week, I went to a local seamstress to see if she could fix it. (She couldn’t fix it, but luckily we came up with another plan that will hopefully make it work for next week). During this whole process though I was getting really stressed out. Lots of things are going on in my life right now and it’s amazing how each little thing causes me to fall apart. (Also my laptop completely died, so my weekly roundup posts might be extremely delayed).

The point of this story:
The day after I had all of this dress drama, I went to my Psychology class and we talked about stress. Appropriate, right? According to my Psychology textbook, stress is a,

Nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it; the arousal, both physical and mental, to situations or events that we perceive as threatening or challenging. (Psychology in Action Tenth Edition by Karen Huffman

The main thing that stuck out to me about stress is it is not necessarily the event that is stressful, most often it is our reaction to the event that makes us stressed. So when I thought my dress was not going to work out, my reaction was to go straight to panic mode, but if I had responded rationally, the event would not have been as stressful as it was.

The rest of the week had some slightly stressful situations in it, but my reaction to them was better. Knowing that I am in control of my stress level makes me calmer in these situations. (Having faith in God helps a lot also, when He is in control, I don’t have to be). Hopefully next week my dress will be done, formal will be amazing, and I will have figured out a good way to share my pictures with you and at least those stressors will be out of the way. Until then, I’ll just be here taking things one step at a time and hopefully not letting myself get too stressed out by the little things in life.

Button-up Shirts…

…are my favorite item of clothing right now. They can be put with everything!

Shirt – Liz Claiborne Collection (Stolen/borrowed from my mother’s closet) * Skirt – Caprette San Francisco (Estate Sale) * Belt – Gift from grandmother * Bracelet – DIY * Shoes – Urban Outfitters

This is one of those outfits that I simply agonized over but once I made my decision I was sure it was the right one. It was one of those outfits that I walked out the door and felt confident instead of insecure about what I was wearing. That is always the challenge when playing in the world of fashion, especially fashion blogging. You never know when something is going to work. Luckily, this outfit did!

(Bracelet/necklace DIY coming soon)

Scarf DIY

Last school year I was the chaplain of my high school girls choir. The girls had a challenge from me to memorize Psalm 146 and whoever said it to me the most weeks out of the year would get a prize. I racked my brain for a long time until finally a week and a half before I needed to give the prize out, I finally knew what I was going to do. My sister had made this scarf DIY for my other sister and I decided to do the same for the choir girls! I used a white scarf from Target and a Marvy Uchida Fabric Marker to make this scarf and the girl who won it absolutely loved it! Here are some pictures from the process. Enjoy!

Oriental Vibe

Shirt – Calvin Klein * Jeans – American Eagle

I absolutely love this scarf. I have no idea where it’s from except that I stole it  borrowed it from my mom’s closet. You can’t really tell in these photos but it has (I believe) Chinese characters on it and I just love the little extra something that it gives to this otherwise very classic and plain outfit.

Mixology

Dress (worn as shirt) – Macy’s * Skirt – Thrifted * Wrap – Calvin Klein

You know those times where you have no idea what to wear? Today was one of those days. I just had to try something new, so I decided to wear this dress (last seen here) as a shirt. It worked out surprisingly well and I was really happy with how it turned out. Do any of you ever wear things some other way?

A Little DIY

I saw this DIY on Pinterest and decided I had to make these for myself. This is the first DIY on my How Do I Make You Pinterest board that I have actually done, so I am really excited about that.  Here is my finished product!

This process was actually really easy. I picked up some embroidery thread at Michael’s in the color I wanted. In this case I wanted some muted, pretty, and feminine colors so I chose a light salmon and grey. Then I came home and knotted the embroidery thread around the headphones until I got to the bottom. I did notice that they are starting to come undone at the ends but I think I will add some glue to the ends or clear nail polish to keep it from going any further. I really liked this DIY and I encourage all of you to try it out! It’s a great way to keep regular headphones from being boring without breaking the bank.

Apparently I am really loving bright colors lately. I love listening to the rain and coming up with new projects. 🙂

Scottish Heritage Sunday

Dress – Chico’s * Scarf as belt – Scottish Treasures * Earrings – Claire’s * Shoes – Toms

Scottish Heritage Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year. Our church comes together and dresses up in kilts and tartans, eats haggis and shortbread, and celebrates our Scottish roots. We even have a bagpiper, which is my favorite part. I would love to have bagpipes at my wedding. The top picture is a picture of my parents and I all wearing the Smith tartan. My dad absolutely loves his kilt, and it is a joy to watch him and all the other men in our church who also wear kilts wear smiles on their faces as they fellowship with each other. It’s a nice reminder to remember where you come from.
