My sister, Megan, and I watched several documentaries over the holiday season and started a blog on Tumblr to document (pun unintended) our documentary journey. So, without further ado, here is my first Wednesday list of the new year!
1. Nursery University – 4/5 stars
This documentary was hilarious, slightly scary, and seriously moving. (amazing for just one documentary!) It follows several families as they go through the extensive nursery school application process in New York. Click through to the link above for more on this documentary! (Netflix Instant)
2. The Tents – 4/5 stars
As you may know from following this blog, I love love love fashion and everything related to it. This documentary follows New York Fashion Week’s start and it’s growth as a major world player in the fashion industry. A great watch for fashion lovers! (Netflix Instant)
3. God Save My Shoes – 4/5 stars
I may or may not have several pairs of shoes in my closet and I am always looking for more to add to the collection. This documentary explores the evolution of the high heel and it’s effect on women’s fashion. So many pretty shoes and so many crazy women. (Netflix Instant)
4. First Position – 5/5 stars
This is near the top (so basically at the top) of our favorite documentaries list. It follows several ballet dancers from around the world as they travel to a national competition in the hope that they win or even, for some of the older dancers, get a contract with a company. This documentary is so great, you should all watch it. (Netflix Instant)
5. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – 4/5 stars
Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber is an incredible musician and his story is pretty spectacular. This documentary follows him on his tour and also explores how he got to that point in his career. It made both of us appreciate him a lot more as a musician and it made us really excited to watch more musician documentaries. (Library Rental)
6. Katy Perry: Part of Me – 5/5 stars
Watching Justin Bieber’s documentary made us really excited to go see the one about Katy Perry’s tour even though neither of us really liked her music. This documentary changed our minds. She was so real in this documentary and shared so much of herself in it that it makes her music a lot more personal and meaningful now when we listen to it. (Movie Theater)
7. The September Issue – 5/5 stars
This documentary is so good. It’s like the real life Devil Wears Prada. This documentary follows Anna Wintour and the staff that works under her as they prepare Vogue’s biggest issue of the year, the september issue. It was fascinating to watch the huge undertaking that making the issue is and to see all of the beautiful pages that came from all of their hard work. (Netflix Instant)
8. Happy – 4/5 stars
How to be happy. Sounds like a great premise for a documentary right? Well, it was, but they didn’t quite execute it well enough to earn five stars. This documentary looks at people in several countries who call themselves happy and explore the physical and mental qualities of happiness. (Netflix Instant)
9. Craigslist Joe – 4/5 stars
Is it possible to survive on other people’s kindness? That is what Joe, the subject of this documentary, wants to find out. Joe sets out in the month of December armed with the clothes on his back and his laptop and searches Craigslist to find food and shelter every night. He doesn’t use any money for the entire month and just relies on other people. It was fascinating to see the kind of people he met that month and to see how generous they were. (Netflix Instant)
